Damascus, December 8, 2024
To our people in Free Syria, and all friends and entities working to assist,
I am Dr. Mahmoud Mustafa, writing to you from Damascus. Today, Sunday, December 8, 2024, I was with a team from the Independent Doctors Association (IDA) at Sednaya Prison until 10:00 PM.
We want to emphasize that the situation inside the prison was unimaginably tragic. While we won’t delve into the suffering of the detainees who were released—you’ve already seen many videos showing just a glimpse of their ordeal—it is crucial to highlight the chaos we witnessed during the evacuation process.
despite the considerable efforts of families to liberate the detainees. A lack of coordination with the relevant authorities led to disorganization, squandering efforts that could have been directed towards a more orderly and effective evacuation.
We had hoped that our joy would be complete with the release of our detainees in a more organized manner, through better coordination with the relevant authorities to ensure these operations were carried out more effectively.
Organized and Documented Release Processes
Documenting the names of released detainees and coordinating their return to their families or ensuring they can be reached when needed.
Medical Referral for Critical Cases
Immediately transferring detainees with critical health conditions to hospitals, as we encountered many in urgent need of medical and psychological care.
Logistical Support for Released Detainees
Providing logistical assistance to ensure the safe and timely reunion of released detainees with their families.
Emergency Food Aid
Supplying urgent and appropriate food to released detainees, many of whom were severely malnourished.
Finally, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the families of the released detainees. May their homes be filled with joy in a Syria that upholds safety and rights for all its citizens. There is much work ahead for all of us.
With warm regards,
Dr. Mahmoud Mustafa
General Director of the Independent Doctors Association
